A ‘FLORAL’ BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE PORCELAIN BOWL, 18th CENTURY A ‘FLORAL’ BLUE AND WHITE SQUARE PORCELAIN BOWL, 18th CENTURY China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). The bowl of square section with canted corners, the upper rim with foliate accents, supported on a straight foot, the exterior finely painted in underglaze blue with four cartouches depicting a lotus pond, rockwork issuing peonies, chrysanthemums, and a branch of blossoming prunus. The narrower sections of the sides and inner rim with a geometric hatched pattern, ruyi, and floral cartouches. The well decorated with a square frame enclosing a blossoming branch and insects. The recessed base with an apocryphal six-character Chenghua mark within a double circle. Provenance: Holzapfel collection, Geneva, Switzerland. This lot was acquired by second generation members of the Holzapfel family after 1970 and has remained in the family ever since. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, a c-shaped hairline crack at the upper rim, and firing flaws including minor fritting, little pitting, and small firing cracks.
