A BAMBOO SHENG (MOUTH ORGAN) A BAMBOO SHENG (MOUTH ORGAN) China, 20th century. The bamboo pipes set into a metal base with slanted mouthpiece and held together by bamboo fittings. One pipe with a sticker reading ‘product of Beijing Ethnic Instrument Factory’ (Beijing minzu leqi chang chupin). Provenance: Croatian private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, one pipe slightly loosened. Weight 697 g Dimensions: Height 49.1 cm Originating in Southeast Asia and used before the twelfth century B.C., the sheng played a significant role in Confucian music. Today, it accompanies folk songs and is occasionally used in Beijing opera to add harmony. Similar to the Western harmonica, which it inspired, the sheng is the only Chinese wind instrument capable of producing multiple notes simultaneously. It is played by both blowing and sucking air. The bamboo pipes, symbolizing the folded wings of the phoenix, are equipped with metal free reeds and are concealed within a bowl-shaped wind chamber.
