AN ARCHAISTIC GILT-BRONZE REPOUSSÉ ‘SQUIRREL AND GRAPES’ BOX AND COVER AN ARCHAISTIC GILT-BRONZE REPOUSSÉ ‘SQUIRREL AND GRAPES’ BOX AND COVER China, style of the Tang dynasty – Qing dynasty (1644-1912) to Republic period (1912-1949). Supported on tripod feet in the form of birds, their beaks downturned and wings outspread, while the rim of the base and cover decorated with archaistic scrolling designs. The cover is decorated with on a ring punched ground with a peahen, dove, and squirrel standing on fruiting grapevines. Condition: Good condition with wear, signs of weathering and erosions, encrustations, minor dents, and small nicks. Provenance: Estate of an Austrian collector, the collection was assembled in the 1980s – 1990s through purchases at Galerie Zacke and other specialized galleries in Vienna. Weight: 133.7 g Dimensions: Diameter 7.2 cm Squirrels are usually shown with grapes, as the former have great reproductive powers while the latter grow in clusters on the vines, implying a wish for ceaseless generations of sons and grandsons.
