A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, TANG DYNASTY A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, TANG DYNASTY China, 618-907. Cast standing on a lotus pedestal supported on a domed base, clothed in thick robes holding mala beads. Here face baring a serene expression with a broad nose and full lips. A tang cast to the back for mounting. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, remnants of gilt and pigment, and nicks. Provenance: Collection of Lumir Jisl. A private collection in the Czech Republic, acquired from the above. The base has one of Jisl’s old collector’s labels, ‘Jisl 220.’ Lumir Jisl (1921-1969) was a Czech archeologist who led excavations in Mongolia and Turkey during the 1950s and 60s. He was a graduate of Charles University, later becoming the director of the Silesian Regional Museum in Opava. He founded the Opava branch of the Archeological Institute of the Academy of Science in Brno which led to his appointment as the head of the prehistoric department of the Academy of Sciences in Prague. He published papers on Lamaist, Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, and Japanese art, earning him international recognition as an expert in the archaeology and art history of Central Asia.
