A POLYCHROME WOOD BOX WITH SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, TIBET, LATE 19TH CENTURY A POLYCHROME WOOD BOX WITH SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS, TIBET, LATE 19TH CENTURY Of rectangular form, the two-part hinged box with metal fittings and a central clasp in the form of a wrathful deity, decorated to the top with the Offering of the Five Senses flanked by the ferocious face of a red and green Mahakala, the sides decorated with scrolling motifs. The wood interior is carved to fit 21 iron tools incised with foliate and geometric motifs. Provenance: A private collection in Vienna, Austria. Condition: Very good condition with wear and natural imperfections. Few nicks, scratches, minor cracks, some flaking, and small losses. Expected wear and traces of use to the surgical instruments. Weight: 6,141 g Dimensions: 60 x 30 x 7 cm For wrathful deities, offering of the Five Senses consists of a skullcap heaped with ears, eyeballs, nose, tongue and a heart of demons. Today there are very few preserved historical surgical instruments of Tibetan medicine. They are usually kept in rectangular painted wooden boxes. In a simpler version, they are sometimes found simply attached to a large piece of sheepskin.
