Description

Spanish school; c. 1800. "Infant Jesus and St. John". Oil on canvas. Relined. Preserves period frame. Signed "Velázquez pinxit 1800". Measurements: 73 x 84 cm: 82 x 94 cm (frame). Devotional scene in which one of the most popular themes in the history of art is represented. In the center of the composition it is possible to appreciate a blond Baby Jesus that directs his look directly towards the spectator. Next to him, on the left side of the scene, we can appreciate a Saint John, older than Jesus, but still a child. Identified with his red mantle and usual phylactery, he looks at his attentive and even intrigued cousin. The scene is completed by a pair of cherubim heads located on the right side to balance the scene compositionally. The infantile representation of the Child Jesus and San Juanito was very habitual uniting, in addition, both figures by its familiar kinship and its similar destiny, in addition to the function of the Baptist and others. Visually, it is one of those "soft and gentle" themes that, in the spectator, awaken memories (or anticipations) of what will happen in the future in the life of both, religion reaching the heart of this same faithful through feeling, as was usual at the time. Thus, it was not unusual to see them "together" both in paintings and sculptures, differentiated by small details. Preserves period frame.
