Description

A YOKUTS COILED GAMBLING TRAY A YOKUTS COILED GAMBLING TRAY North America, California, c. 1900. Of shallow flaring form, woven of willow and devil's claw, with a small dark tondo encircled by a ring of triangle patterns all within a leather-tie rim. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few loose leather ties. Provenance: Estate of Wolfgang Zacke (1942-2022), co-founder of Galerie Zacke, thence by descent. Dimensions: Diameter 33 cm Games of chance were played by many of California’s indigenous peoples, most using dice as the means of play. Gambling trays, like the present lot, would have been used for games such as huuchuish. Huuchuish was a game of dice played primarily by women in the Yokuts tribe in which eight walnut-shell dice were thrown and sticks were used to keep score. While many indigenous games may have been pastimes, some were intended to train youth in skills they would need to survive or to showcase such skills in adults.
