One leaf from Hokusai's Manga, Vol. 8. Illustrating a Mulberry-picking Old Man (Saisoro). Sketches like these were printed in albums as original prints and served as a template for many of Hokusai’s famous works. SIZE of the sheet 23 x 16 cm 2. Illustrating an ornate vase with medicinal herbs and a tall, curved handle which supports a scythe. Inscribed, ‘Saiyaku’ [collecting medicinal herbs] 採薬 and ‘Jicchikusai’ 十竹斎. SIZE of the sheet 31.5 x 18.5 cm 3. Illustrating a sketch of Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri) seated on a shishi. SIZE of the sheet 26.3 x 18.7 cm Condition: Good condition with expected wear. Light stains, some fading, and soiling. Binding holes. Gently mounted on a paper passepartout. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, acquired from the above, and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art. Together they built a substantial and diverse art collection over many decades.
