The surimono depicting a bowl with dandelions, a pair of shears, and a spool of thread. SIZE of the sheet 14 x 19 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and slightly trimmed margins. The colors slightly faded, minor stains, and a centerfold. Gently mounted on a cardboard with a descriptive label. Provenance: From the private collection of Thomas Padua, Mühldorf, Germany. Thomas Padua was an artist and collector of Japanese woodblock prints who exhibited his surimono collection at the Olaf Gulbransson Museum, in ‘Glückwünsche aus Kyoto: Japanische Shijo-Surimono aus der Sammlung Thomas Padua,’ 3 November 2013 to 26 January 2014. Surimono, literally "printed matter", are high-quality, limited-edition, privately commissioned, woodblock-printed "greeting cards," mainly produced between the 1790s and the 1830s, and usually ordered for New Year's greetings. Surimono usually paired poetic texts with images, and both were typically intended to carry the cachet of "insider knowledge" for a cultured and well-educated audience. Museum comparison: Compare a related surimono with dandelions for the new year, attributed to Hokusai, in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums, object number 1933.4.1799.
