Mounted as a hanging scroll on a paper frame with bamboo handles. Depicting the eccentric Zen-Buddhist hermits Kanzan (Hanshan) and Jittoku (Shide) depicted in typical pose, Hanzan holding a scroll and Jittoku with his broom. Image SIZE 33 x 48.1 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 117 x 51.2 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little soiling, creasing, and slight browning of paper Sengai Gibon (1750-1837) was a Japanese monk of the Rinzai school (one of three main schools of Zen Buddhism in Japan). He was known for his controversial teachings and writings, as well as for his lighthearted sumi-e paintings. After spending half of his life in Nagata near Yokohama, he secluded himself in Shofuku-ji in Fukuoka, the first Zen temple in Japan, where he spent the rest of his life.
