A SCROLL PAINTING OF KINTARO, AFTER YOSA BUSON A SCROLL PAINTING OF KINTARO, AFTER YOSA BUSON Japan, 20th century Ink and watercolors on paper. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with stag antler handles. Depicting Kintaro walking barefoot, carrying his familiar axe. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Shain’ 謝寅 and inscribed ‘Taisho ninen’ (‘Year 1913’). SIZE of the sheet 89.5 x 28.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 150 x 43 cm Condition: Wear, soiling, fading, creasing, and folds. Presenting well. Yosa Buson (1716-1784) was born outside Osaka and moved to Edo (Tokyo) to study both painting and haiku. Like his literary hero, Basho, Buson traveled widely through Japan, publishing notes from his journeys under the name Buson. He is known as one of the great haiku masters, and his work is generally regarded as more sensuous. Buson was also influenced by Chinese poetry. In the 1750s, he settled in Kyoto, where he continued his career as a painter and changed his surname to Yosa.
