A SCROLL PAINTING OF CRANES AND PINE, AFTER YOSA BUSON, c. 1900s A SCROLL PAINTING OF CRANES AND PINE, AFTER YOSA BUSON, c. 1900s Japan, late 19th to early 20th century Ink, watercolors, and gouache on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with wooden handles. Depicting a flock of cranes, some flying, some preening, and one feeding its young in a nest, nestled among the thick leaves of a gnarled pine tree. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Shachoko sha’ 謝長庚寫 with seal. Image SIZE 103 x 40.5 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 197 x 53 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Light soiling, creasing, tiny stains, and some foxing. The frame with usual traces of wear and age. With a wood tomobako storage box. (2) Yosa Buson (1716-1784) was born outside Osaka and moved to Edo (Tokyo) to study both painting and haiku. Like his literary hero, Basho, Buson traveled widely through Japan, publishing notes from his journeys under the name Buson. He is known as one of the great haiku masters, and his work is generally regarded as more sensuous. Buson was also influenced by Chinese poetry. In the 1750s, he settled in Kyoto, where he continued his career as a painter and changed his surname to Yosa.
