A SCROLL PAINTING OF MONKEYS, AFTER MATSUMURA GOSHUN, c. 1900s A SCROLL PAINTING OF MONKEYS, AFTER MATSUMURA GOSHUN, c. 1900s Japan, late 19th to early 20th century Ink and watercolors on silk. Mounted as a hanging scroll on a silk brocade frame with stag antler handles. Depicting eleven mischievous monkeys in a mountainous landscape. Inscriptions: Signed ‘Goshun’ 呉春 with seal. Image SIZE 102 x 32 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 179 x 44.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Some soiling, light fading, minor creases, folds, and miniscule losses. The frame with signs of wear and age. With a wood tomobako storage box. (2) Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811), sometimes also referred to as Matsumura Gekkei, was a Japanese painter of the Edo period and founder of the Shijo school of painting. He was a disciple of the painter and poet Yosa Buson (1716–1784), a master of Japanese southern school painting.
