Boldly painted with fresh carp displayed on a platter. Image SIZE 27.5 x 37 cm, SIZE incl. frame 43 x 59.5 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Some soiling. Firmly mounted behind a passepartout. The frame in excellent condition. Provenance: From the collection of Teddy Hahn, Darmstadt, acquired from Japan Art, Frankfurt, 1981, and thence by descent to the present owner. A copy of the receipt from Japan Art, Frankfurt, dated 9 May 1981, stating the purchase price as DEM 1,200 or EUR 1,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Theodor “Teddy” Hahn was a well-known and respected collector of netsuke and other Asian works of art. After spending time in museums to study the early cultures of the world, finding particular interest in their sculptures, he began collecting, remarking, ‘I somehow knew it would have a profound influence on my life. How right I was. And how happy I have been.’
