Dalian has a historic connection with Japan, as it was under Japanese control after defeating Russia in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. Mounted to a passepartout and framed in a wooden frame, behind plexiglass. Condition: Good condition with minor wear, few creases and possibly touch-ups. Provenance: Collection of Gaston Lazard (1878-1956) and his wife Jane Levy (1886-1985), thence by descent within the same family. Dimensions: Cut out size 34 x 28 cm, Size incl. frame 58 x 50 cm

Image SIZE 35.7 x 16.4 cm, SIZE incl. mounting 78.5 x 30.3 cm Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. The silk brocade frame with signs of use and wear. Tatsunyo (1780-1865) was the 20 th abbot of the Higashi Honganji Temple, Kyoto. He was known for his skills in painting and calligraphy. He resided as the head abbot for 54 years between 1792 and 1846, succeeding his father Jonyo (1744-1792), who passed away as the 19th abbot of the same temple. Tatsunyo’s ingo (title given to a Buddhist priest) was Mujokakuin. His imina (personal name) was Mitsuro. His gago (pseudonym) was Gusen. His childhood name was Setsumaru (later changed to Koyomaru).
