Description

Large Persian carpet. Khorasan, first half of the 20th century. Hand knotted wool. Signed. It presents marks of use and wear; small damage on one side. Measurements: 400 x 298 cm. Iranian carpet of considerable proportions. It presents a maroon or red field decorated with vegetal motifs that are born from a central rosette of lobed profile that houses in its bosom small rosettes. Bulbous clusters, sinuous bouquets and garlands develop in intertwined growths, repeating their motifs with rich variations in the fretwork that decorate the three borders. Red, ochre, brown, beige and blue tones dominate. In the province of Khorasan, especially in Kashmar, amazing carpets of high quality have been woven for centuries. These carpets are dense, with fine, soft wool, in beautiful shades of light blue contrasted with ivory beige. Pale green, red and brown are currently used. One of the characteristics of the Kashmar is the large size and complex designs with many details. Kashmar carpets are very resistant and gain with time. They are woven in urban centers, in workshops and with fixed weavers (as opposed to nomads). The designs are first drawn on paper by carpet designers. The weaver follows these designs. However, there may be slight variations in texture in these rugs.
