Description

Chinese folding screen. Coromandel style, first third century. Carved and lacquered wood. Presents marks of use and wear, some faults. Needs to be reworked. Measurements: 175 x 240 cm (open); 175 x 40 cm (leaf). Chinese screen in carved and lacquered wood, representing a prototypical landscape of Chinese painting, based on trees with birds occupying the six leaves and bordered by a decorative strip. The landscape has a great lyrical force. A Coromandel screen is a folding screen made of several wooden panels covered with black lacquer and often with representations of Chinese daily life or landscape motifs, using different materials such as gold and precious stones like jade. It is estimated that the first Coromandel screens were made in Northern China during the Qing Dynasty. Despite being part of Chinese culture, the name comes from the coast of Coromandel, in India, where screens and other Chinese art pieces were shipped on ships carrying goods to Europe, with the first screens arriving at the end of the 17th century.
