Ɏ A MARINE IVORY OKIMONO OF TAKOTSUBO AND FISHERMEN Ɏ A MARINE IVORY OKIMONO OF TAKOTSUBO AND FISHERMEN Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) Carved in three parts, depicting two fishermen being attacked by octopuses (tako) attempting to break out of their small pot traps (tsubo). Finely incised and inked to depict three figures standing on a rockwork base, the man in the center alarmed as one octopus wraps one of its long tentacles around his neck, cutting his circulation, while he attempts to knock the cephalopod out with his oar. His companion is in a similar dilemma as he tries to push another octopus down in its trap, as one of the octopus’s tentacles grabs his foot and another stealthily makes its way around his neck. All the while, a frantic young boy jumps up and down, raising the alarm to get people’s attention. The eyes of one octopus inlaid. HEIGHT 14 cm Condition: With wear and natural imperfections. Age cracks, nicks, and scratches. Losses to some tentacles and inlays and with some repairs. Overall presenting very well. Provenance: Collection Gabor Orszagh, Budapest, Hungary. This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. It is typically not possible to export such items outside of the EU, including to the UK. Therefore, after this item has the necessary trade certificate, it can only be shipped within the EU or picked up in our gallery in person.
