GYOKUMIN: A WOOD NETSUKE OF A BLINDMAN ON HAMAGURI CLAM GYOKUMIN: A WOOD NETSUKE OF A BLINDMAN ON HAMAGURI CLAM By Gyokumin, signed Gyokumin 玉珉 Japan, Nagoya, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The hapless male with one eye closed and one eye opened, caught by his fundoshi within the lips of a clam. The subject references, quite humorously, a parody of the seduction of feminine wiles, the clam representing the female here. Asymmetrical himotoshi and signature GYOKUMIN underneath. HEIGHT 2.8 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear and a tiny notch to the blindman’s chin. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, acquired from the above, and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art. Together they built a substantial and diverse art collection over many decades.
