Ɏ AN EARLY IVORY NETSUKE OF TOBOSAKU SENNIN Ɏ AN EARLY IVORY NETSUKE OF TOBOSAKU SENNIN Unsigned Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of flattened, slightly curved shape, depicting the elder sennin bending slightly forward and standing on one leg, lifting the other in a dynamic motion while keeping his balance with his gnarled staff. Wearing his typical leaf cloak, the sennin’s expression is jovial. The top of his staff suspends two peaches. Good, asymmetrical himotoshi through the back, the ivory bearing a rich, honey-yellow patina. HEIGHT 7.3 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected age cracks. Trade Certificate: The trade certificate for the sale of this lot within the EU has been granted (permit number 22NL308333/20). This item contains ivory, rhinoceros horn, tortoise shell, and/or some types of tropical wood and is subject to CITES when exporting outside the EU. Wearing his typical leaf cloak tied at the waist, his belt suspending a double-gourd flask, the mouth of the immortal is opened in surprise revealing teeth, his brows raised, and his wide eyes inlaid with red horn pupils. Perfectly functional and generously excavated himotoshi to the back. HEIGHT 10.2 cm Condition: Extensive wear, singeing, natural age cracks, and the feet restored. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, acquired from the above, and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art. Together they built a substantial and diverse art collection over many decades. A remarkable netsuke of unusual character and charm, heavily worn throughout the centuries.
