A WOOD NETSUKE OF A RAT ON A DESICCATED SALMON A WOOD NETSUKE OF A RAT ON A DESICCATED SALMON Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Carved in wood with a rat nibbling on the head of dried salmon (shiozake), a classic dish during Japanese New Year (Shogatsu). The fish carved with an open mouth, revealing the teeth within, and the plump rat, detailed with inlaid eyes and a long scrolling tail, enjoying its spoils. Himotoshi through the center of the fish and inscribed Tomotada to the head. LENGTH 8.7 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. Minor fritting along the edge of the salmon’s tail.
