The motif was once very popular in Japanese art and was thought that the ferocity of the shishi was only tempered by the beauty of the peony. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims. Signed to the bottom SHIGEKATA with kakihan. Provenance: From the collection of Dr. E. F. The interior with an old collector’s label, ‘Dr. E.F., 212.” Condition: Extensive wear, traces of use, nicks, cracks to the lacquer, and small losses with associated old repairs.
