Signed HOSHIGAOKA OTAKA HIRONAGA with kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram). HEIGHT 7.2 cm, LENGTH 6.6 cm WEIGHT 104.6 g Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and slight tarnishing. The artist is listed in Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 286 (H 01366.0). Haynes identifies the artist as the student of Sunagawa Masachika and Bamen Tsunemasa. He worked in the styles of both his masters, and died between 1800-1850. Museum comparison: Compare a related iron sukashi tsuba by the same artist depicting bamboo, signed Otaka Hironaga, in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford university, accession number EAX.10713.
