A SILK JINBAORI (ARMOR SURCOAT) A SILK JINBAORI (ARMOR SURCOAT) Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) The surcoat of mustard yellow, lined with a beige fabric and with a floral brocade collar lined in cotton to the interior, the back decorated with a central roundel in dark blue. HEIGHT 89 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little staining, and few loose threads. The jinbaori was originally a simple tunic worn over armor as protection against the weather. From the 1500s samurai generals wore increasingly decorative armor and tunics to show their status and taste.
