A LARGE AND FINE BRONZE OKIMONO DEPICTING A BOY WITH A MUSICIAN A LARGE AND FINE BRONZE OKIMONO DEPICTING A BOY WITH A MUSICIAN Japan, late Edo period (1615-1868) to early Meiji period (1868-1912) Finely cast, the two figures standing atop a large table elaborately decorated with takaramono (auspicious treasure) supported on four cabriole legs cast with two rain dragons gripping a flaming tama over crashing waves. The elderly musician holds his shamisen, strumming its three strings with a large pick, as the boy looks on in glee, his mouth open wide, eyes squinting, and his hand raised as he slaps his thigh to the rhythm of the music. Both figures are clothed in elaborate robes with the man’s decorated with butterflies, stylized mythical beasts, and bats, while the boy’s robe has reishi heads and coiling dragons. The table’s apron is decorated with geometric designs, stylized rain dragons, and rinzu. HEIGHT 48.8 cm WEIGHT 12.4 kg Condition: Good condition with minor wear, minor casting flaws, light scratches, and one leg repaired. The bronze is covered in a rich, unctuous patina.
