Description

ANTONIO RODRÍGUEZ VALDIVIESO (Granada, 1918 - Madrid, 2000). "Carnival".1994. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 46 x 38 cm; 53 x 45 cm (frame). Under the light of a street lamp that gives the trees golden reflections, a carnival scene develops in which the dance and the costumes are suggested more than represented in detail. This is achieved through a bold use of line and color: synthetic strokes that draw arabesques and capture the rhythm, bodies that pulsate in elusive whites. A painter and engraver considered one of the main representatives of Spanish figuration in the second half of the 20th century, Valdivieso trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in Granada, and was a member of the group of painters at the former Buchholz gallery in Madrid, where he exhibited regularly both individually and collectively. Between 1951 and 1952 he lived in Paris, and later collaborated with the architect Fernandez del Amo in the Plan of the National Institute of Colonization, making several stained glass windows for churches in Madrid, Lleida and Valladolid. He is currently represented at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
