Description

ABEL DOMINIQUE BOYÉ (Marmande, France, 1864 - Paris, 1933). "Beauty in front of the sea". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower margin. Measurements: 100 x 73 cm; 118 x 95 cm (frame). The dim and amber light of the sunset enhances the beauty of this young woman in the foreground, next to the shore. The twilight light emphasizes the golden smoothness of her skin, the blue depth of her eyes and the wheaty tone of her curls. The wide white cotton blouse slides down her bare arm and exposes one of her breasts. Abel Dominique Boyé takes up the romantic tradition in his sensual portraits. Abel Dominique Boyé was a disciple of Benjamin Constant in Paris. In 1892 he made a trip to Toledo where he painted the picture "Le mendiant" (The beggar) which is preserved in the Albert Marzelles Museum in the French town of Marmande. In 1893 he visited Seville, the result of his stay is the work entitled "Un dimanche a Séville" or "Sevillana" (La Ilustración Artística, 1901). The life and work of the author has been reviewed in "À la découverte de Abel Boyé. Peintre de la fin du XIX siècle. Dossier pour l'enseignement" of the Musée Albert Marzelles, and in "La Ilustración Artística", Number 1.027,1901.
