JUSEPPE MARULLO Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well Oil on canvas, 113.5x141 cm The painting is a characteristic, high-quality work by Marullo, datable to around 1640. Of Marullo we have little data for his early training, but his painting shows a careful knowledge and study of the various trends that ran through Naples during the 17th century. He has been associated with Stanzione but was also influenced by the poetics of Bolognese classicism; a vein of naturalism certainly received from Ribera persists in his work. Contact with Francesco Guarino's work in Apulia also introduced him to the rich narrative details prevalent in the local setting. The painting lends itself to precise comparisons with signed works by Marullo such as a "Lot with Daughters" from a private collection (fig. 1) where the figure of the woman on the right appears axes close to that of the Samaritan woman in our painting.
