NICOLAES MAES (attributed to) Ganymede abducted by Jupiter transformed into an eagle Oil on canvas, 57x48.5 cm The beautiful Ganymede was, according to mythology, abducted to heaven by Jupiter in the form of an eagle, to become cupbearer of the table of the gods. The myth was often treated in the figurative arts. The painting can be usefully compared with Maes' works of similar subject matter such as those in the Fogg Museum (USA) and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow.
