Bretagne - SAUVAGEAU (Michel). Coûtumes de Bretagne [...] Rennes, Vatar, 1738. In-4 of [7] ff. 2-242-[78]-106-[2]-40-52 pp. Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, gilt arms in the center of the boards (period binding). Edition unknown to Levot (Biographie bretonne) and Sacher. Part complete without sequels (mention of Tome premier on title). "It is improperly indicated as forming two volumes in-4°, because its title only suits volume 1 of the bookseller Mareschal's publication of which it is a part. It contains, with observations, following each article of the Coutume, the local Usements of Brittany, a treatise on the Breton, Poitevin and Angevin marches, the principal rulings of the Parlement de Bretagne and remarks on the articles of the Coutume on which d'Argentré is of a contrary opinion to that of various authors, then finally a treatise on the indult of cardinals and graduates relative to ecclesiastical benefices located in Brittany. As for the second volume, it presents only an edition of the very old Coutume, with the notes of the anonymous author and the marginal indication of the corresponding articles of the new Coutume, followed by a collection of the old constitutions and ordinances made by the Dukes of Brittany. Michel Sauvagcau's work, which contains precise and substantial notes on the interpretation of the Coutume, was considered one of the most useful and practical, especially before the work of Duparc-Poullain. Levot, Biographie bretonne, II, 837 (referring to the 1710 edition, but whose various parts in Volume I correspond to this 1738 edition). Handwritten bookplate Maugart 1817. Some very minor wear to binding. A fine copy bearing the arms of Chancellor SEGUIER (O.H.R. 271, n°1.)
