On April 20, 1816, Viscount de Dampmartin (1755-1825) was appointed by Louis XVIII as librarian of the Dépôt de la Guerre, replacing Jean-Baptiste Massieu (1743-1818), former constitutional bishop of Oise and a regicide member of the Convention. Two weeks after his arrival, he began transcribing part of the Dépôt's military archives, with the help of two copyists. The two unpublished volumes we present contain the fruit of 18 months' labor: when Clarke resigned from the Ministry of War in September 1817, Dampmartin lost both his post and his protector. The first attempt to transcribe the archives of the Dépôt de la Guerre.
