The pin was normally given to British sailors working mine patrols, In 1940 during Operation Dynamo (Dunkirk Evacuation) The Navy was to commandeer as many small boats possible and with a Naval crew sail to Dunkirk. However, the skippers of these small craft were not having none of it, and sailed the boats themselves to Dunkirk. They were awarded with a Defence medal with a Naval Patrol Service Pin.
