Description

Darryl F. Zanuck's Hand-Annotated Script for The Three Musketeers Daryl Zanuck's hand-annotated script for "The Three Musketeers," bound in the original Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation paper wrappers, 142 pages, 9.25 x 11.5, dated September 23, 1938, initialed on the front cover in pencil by the producer, "D. Z." Zanuck makes substantial pencil corrections throughout, with various revisions to dialogue, deletions, check marks, camera directions, and other amendments. In fine condition, with light toning and wear to the paper covers from use. A musical comedy film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel, The Three Musketeers stars Don Ameche as d'Artagnan, with the Ritz Brothers as his cowardly helpers. Reviewing the movie, New York Times critic Frank Nugent wrote: 'That isn't a buzzing in your ears you've been hearing; it's Dumas, fils, spinning in his grave as the Ritz Brothers play his 'Three Musketeers'...It seems ironic that Mr. Zanuck's first attempt to deal reverently with a classic—in every respect but the Ritzes' share in it—should be impeded by its very reverence to the classic. The trouble, it appears, is that his burlesques are too serious and that his serious efforts are too often burlesques.'
