Lew Wallace War-Dated Autograph Letter Signed: "Stiffen the backbones of the Judges in yr. counties, and not a disloyal man will get into the ballot box" Union general (1827-1905) who became better known as the author of the best-selling religio-historical novel Ben-Hur. Civil War-dated ALS, one page both sides, 5 x 8, April 1, 1864. Addressed from “Baltimore,” a handwritten letter to “Friend Cresswell,” in full: “I call yr. attention and our mutual friend, Mrs. Davis’, to the Afternoon Edition of the American Apr. 1, in which find correspondence between Gov. Bradford and myself. He agrees with me that the Judges of Election have the power to try a man's loyalty, and reject his vote if he be disloyal. After that, all you have to do is to stiffen the backbones of the Judges in yr. counties, and not a disloyal man will get into the ballot box. Call upon Mr. Davis, and he will show you my instructions to the military. They will report to the Judges, and be ready to support them. That is my work: the back bone operation is yours. Any suggestions?” Wallace adds a postscript: “This is inter nos, except as to Mr. Davis.” In fine condition.
