Grand loto des mots historiques. Saussine, Edit. Paris (circa 1900) Grand loto des mots historiques. Saussine, Edit. Paris (circa 1900). Wood-cardboard box, size 37.5 x 29 x 4.5 cm. Chromolithography on the lid: central scene showing Clovis at the battle of Tolbiac, a different historical scene in each corner (Napoleon in Egypt, Henri IV at Rocroy, Louis XIV, Daumesnil at Vincennes); these scenes are separated by banners inscribed with famous phrases. The inside of the box is divided into three sections, and contains: twelve 20.7 x 13.5 cm cards with a chromolithograph glued to the front, showing three historical scenes in which a famous word is uttered, with a small banner below each image bearing a fragment of the famous phrase and the date; thirty-six small 6.5 x 3 cm cards reproducing the banners below the images; a large bag (to hold the small cards), a small bag of betting chips, and a cardboard basket. Historical and educational lotto game. The small cards are placed in the large bag, and the cards are distributed among the players, each of whom places a bet. The cards are drawn one by one from the bag, the game master reads the fragment of a sentence, the player who has the corresponding scene on one of his cards completes the sentence and gets the card back; eventually, he doesn't get off scot-free, and has to explain the scene, situate it in the historical context and all those academic details that spoil everything! The first player to complete his cards wins. In beautiful condition.
