HISTORY - SPAIN Alfonso XIII of (1886 - 1941) - Autograph signature Autograph signature and date “8 Sep. 1928” by the King of Spain from 1886 until 14 April 1931, when the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed. Like other European monarchs of his time he played a political role, entailing a controversial use of his constitutional executive powers. His wedding to Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg in 1906 was marred by an attempt at regicide. 1 p. (15 x 24 cm). - This item is under temporary import. Commemorative medal of Alfonso XII of Spain, "The Peacemaker", (Madrid 1857-1885), was King of Spain from 1874 to 1885. His reign marked the end of the First Republic, which gave way to the period known as the Restoration. It was characterized by the attempt to consolidate the monarchy and institutional stability. He approved the Constitution of 1876, put an end to the Carlist conflicts and signed the peace with Cuba, thus earning his nickname. The king's life ended when he was only twenty-seven years old, being a victim of tuberculosis, but achieving great popularity. His successor was his posthumous son Alfonso XIII.

Certificate and handwritten letter issued in December 1886 and January 1887 by which María Cristina de Habsburgo, in her capacity as Queen Regent of Spain and on behalf of her son Alfonso XIII, names Máximo Santos "Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Military Merit" in view of "the circumstances of the Lieutenant General of the Army of the Republic of Uruguay".
