On 29 January 1919, Nicholas was moved to Peter and Paul Fortress in Petrograd, and in the early hours of the following day he was shot there by a firing squad, along with his brother, Grand Duke George Mikhailovich, and his cousins Grand Dukes Paul Alexandrovich and Dmitri Constantinovich. Addressed to the painter Édouard Détaille (1848 - 1912): “…J’ai une petite demande à vous faire. Ci-joint je vous envoie un portrait d’un général de division du premier Empire dont le nom m’est inconnu et que Fr. Masson ne peut déterminer…”. 3 pp. In-8. - This item is under temporary import.
