Pupin is best known for his numerous patents, including a means of greatly extending the range of long-distance telephone communication. He was a founding member of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) on 3 March 1915, which later became NASA, and he participated in the founding of American Mathematical Society and American Physical Society. Addressed to the American impressionist painter and President of the Society of Arts and Sciences Walter Russell (1871-1963), recommending a gentleman: “…Robert Andrews Millikan is a very good candidate for the Science Medal for 1929. I certainly approve of Dr. Slosson’s suggestion. May I add that Mr. Davisson of the Wester Electric Co. has made a very important discovery lately; the discovery, namely, that moving electrons when reflected by metalic surfaces, behave like sources of radiatons…”. 1 p.
