SCIENCE - GAY-LUSSAC Louis-Joseph (1778 - 1850) - Autograph letter signed Autograph letter signed by the French chemist and physicist. He is known mostly for his discovery with von Humboldt that water is made of two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen by volume and for his work on alcohol–water mixtures, which led to the degrees Gay-Lussac used to measure alcoholic beverages in many countries. Addressed to the painter Claude-François Mirault (1784-1862), presidennt of the Athénée des Arts: “…N’ayant point eu l’honneur de vous voir hier à l’académie où je suis resté jusqu’à 4 h. Je vous envoie le mémoire que vous aviez bien voulu me communiquer…”. 1 p. In-8. - This item is under temporary import. Lyon, Jean Frellon, 1547. In-12, cream vellum, smooth spine, horizontal title (later binding). Magnificent suite of woodcuts by Hans Lutzelburger, after drawings by Hans Holbein. The most complete edition, containing 98 figures, 6 more than the first of 1538. Each woodcut is accompanied by a Latin text and a French quatrain by Gilles Corrozet. The engravings are in an excellent edition. There are 2 types of copies of this book with French and Latin text, dated 1547. The first, whose proofs are pale but beautiful, was printed on the original woodcuts; the second, with the same date, was printed on clichés. This copy conforms in all respects to Brunet's III-253 description of the original woodcut. Bound with the GAY-LUSSAC supra-libris, probably by Jules Gay-Lussac son of Louis-Joseph Gay-Lussac famous French chemist and physicist, known for his studies on the properties of gases. A very fine, fresh copy, with a few leaves a little short of margin.
