† A LARGE THANGKA DEPICTING VAJRAPANI, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY † A LARGE THANGKA DEPICTING VAJRAPANI, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY Distemper and gold on cloth. Finely painted as a blue-skinned Vajrapani striding on a lotus base, wielding a vajra in his raised right hand with his left hand held in karana mudra, wearing a tiger-skin and billowing scarves, richly adorned in gold jewelry. His face bearing a fierce expression, his figure entirely enveloped in a flaming nimbus surrounded by thick smoke. The central figure is encircled by numerous bodhisattva and monks, centered at the top by Amitabha Buddha, each seated on a lotus pedestal with a gold nimbus and surrounded by colorful clouds. Provenance: Acquired by the father of the present owner in Tibet around 1970 and thence by descent. Condition: Extensive wear, fading, creases, folds, fraying to edges, and losses, overall presenting very well. Dimensions: 121.5 x 145 cm Literature comparison: Compare a related thangka of Mahakala, 75.6 x 48.9 cm, dated 19th century, in the Norton Simon Museum, accession number P.2001.07. 13% VAT will be added to the hammer price additional to the buyer's premium - only for buyers within the EU.
