Portrait of kabuki actor Segawa Kikunojo V (1802-1832) in the role of the courtesan Oiso no Tora. The toggle to the end of the cord is decorated with the actor's mon crest. SIZE of the sheet 38 x 25.9 cm Condition: Good condition with good colors and wear. Some soiling, staining, and foxing. The wormholes repaired. Gently mounted on a passepartout. There are two different sets of prints that follow the same template. The first is by Toyokuni I, the teacher, from ca. 1823 and the second is by Kunisada, his pupil, from ca. 1838. Toyokuni III, also known as Utagawa Kunisada, was born in the Honjo district of Edo as Kunisada Tsunoda. Kunisada’s family owned a small hereditary ferryboat service. Though his father, an amateur poet, died when Kunisada was a child, the family business provided some financial security. During his childhood, he showed considerable promise in painting and drawing. Due to strong familial ties with literary and theatrical circles, he spent time studying actor portraits.

Titled Actor Asao Yoroku II as Izumobo and Actor Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Umashi Toroku, from the Kabuki adaptation of the drama The Potted Trees. The servant Izumobo is wearing kneepads from chopping the wood to kindle the fire, the sub-zero temperatures evident from the frozen noses of the two figures.
