Dayazhai bowl - China, Guangxu period, 1875-1908 - Bellied, upward-sweeping form over a round base ring; outside painted in grisaille with flowering shrubs on a lemon-yellow ground, in the hollow an emblem in grisaille. Porcelain. Under the rim an iron-red three-character mark "dayazhai" next to an oval reserve framed by dragons with the inscription "tiandi yijia chun" (~heaven and earth celebrate spring as a family), at the bottom also in iron-red four-character mark Yong Qing Chang Chun (~eternal prosperity and lasting spring). H. 10.5 cm, Ø 22.5 cm.

This large brush pot is characterized by its decoration based on cranes, bats and signs of happiness. Emperor Guangxu also known by his temple name Emperor Dezong of Qing, personal name Zaitian, was the tenth emperor of the Qing dynasty, and the ninth Qing emperor to rule China proper. His reign, which lasted from 1875 to 1908, was largely dominated by his aunt, Empress Dowager Cixi. Guangxu initiated the radical Hundred Days Reform, but it was abruptly interrupted when the empress dowager staged a coup d'état in 1898. After the death of Emperor Tongzhi in 1875, Empress Dowager Cixi installed her four-year-old nephew as Emperor Guangxu, contravening Qing dynastic custom.
