Cupid stoking the embers of love - 19th century Italian sculptor - On a tall marble column with an octagonal base and fluted shaft, a winged putto sits on a stone, fanning a flame with a bellows. Made of gray-black and Carrara marble. H. column 111 cm, h. putto 77 cm. - Minor chips to the column; the putto with small chips, one toe glued. - Provenance: acquired from the Palacio de Linares in Madrid in the 1950s.

Slumbering Venus with Cupid Erotic depiction of the naked Venus - goddess of love, slumbering on a divan with her equally naked boyish son Cupid, who holds an arrow in his hand while his mother holds the accompanying bow, the artist visualises the two figures of Roman mythology full of supposed innocence and as an ideal team in matters of love, while Cupid awakens desire and love with his fired arrows, the beautiful Venus stands for love per se, the motif was created by Marc Antonio [Marcantonio] Franceschini (1648-1729), this inverted, copied reproduction probably goes back to the gallery engraving by Quirin Mark (1753-1811) from 1783, glazed painting, oil on canvas, 2nd half 19th century, glazed painting, oil on canvas, 2nd half 19th century, painted in the style of a painting.
