Rint, Johann (attrib.) - Magnificent, museum-like centerpiece - (Kukus/Bohemia 1814-1900 Linz) Three sea creatures with curled tails above a round stand with foliate frieze, three tree trunks between them, their heavily branched, openwork branches with extremely filigree carved foliage merging into the oval dome, multi-pass and swinging mouth; two very finely executed and detailed relief depictions: in a chariot drawn by panthers, a female figure and cupids surrounding her, probably Ariadne or Diana, the other scene with a youth and dog in the foreground, behind them a large company playing music and bathing, probably Aktaion and Diana bathing with her nymphs. Boxwood. H. 20.5 cm. - Johann Rint's talent was already recognizable at a young age, so that he repeatedly received commissions from various personalities. After he created the so-called "Emperor's Cup" for Empress Elisabeth, he was appointed court carver. Today, works by Johann Rint can be found in Ambras Castle, St. Valentine's Church in Untermeis, St. Florian's Abbey, the Austrian State Museum and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
