Coeval binding in marbled stock, title and friezes in gold on spine, marbled guard sheets, red boards. Pages XXIV, 399, 1 blank. 1 engraved and folded map depicting Naples and its environs, 5 engraved and folded plates at end of volume with views of Vesuvius. Heraldic ex libris topped with marquis crown pasted to the counterplate and verso of the guard sheet. Slight traces of use to binding, nice copy. First French edition. Della-Torre, librarian of the Bourbon Museum, scientist and volcanologist, observed the eruptions of Vesuvius in 1751 and 1754. To complete his exposition he referred to what had been written on the subject since Antiquity. This French edition is expanded: it also contains the "Dissertation critique" by Father Gaetan d'Amato (p. 295 - 370) and, at the end, the interesting additions by Della Torre himself.
