[SCHMIED (F.-L.)]. Original lacquer executed by Jean DUNAND to decorate a binding of The Jungle Book. Splendid circular lacquer (15 cm diameter) executed by Jean DUNAND after F. L. SCHMIED. Set on a brass plate, this lacquer with precious eggshell inclusions depicts Mowgli seated in front of the black panther Bagheera, against a geometrically stylized jungle background. Remains of leather and binding on reverse of plate, case. An identical lacquer was present on a binding by G. Cretté for Le Livre de la jungle (Paris, Société du Livre contemporain, 1919).
