Prince Aphai Mani. Thailand, XIX century. Carved and polychrome wood. Decorated with inlaid carved crystals. It presents marks of use and wear. Needs to be reworked. Measurements: 65 x 46 x 50 cm. Thai sculpture in carved and polychrome wood, representing the prince Aphai Mani seated in the lotus posture and playing a kind of flute. This one, called "pi", is according to the legend a magic instrument with the power to bewitch those who listen to it. Aphai Mani is the hero of an epic poem written by one of Thailand's most beloved poets, Sunthorn Phu. The story begins with Prince Aphai Mani, who is banished by his father because of his interest in music and art, rather than military skills. Aphai Mani embarks on numerous adventures. In one of them, he is captured by a mermaid named Phisuea Samut, who falls in love with him. With the mermaid's help, Aphai Mani escapes and continues his journey. Aphai Mani meets several women and fights supernatural enemies, such as the giant Yaksa. Throughout his adventures, he faces challenges that test his wits and courage.
