RARE SUBJECT "LES CIGALES" by Bernard BUFFET (1928-1999) Oil on isorel, signed lower left. Painted in 1995. Provenance: private collection, certificate of authenticity enclosed. Size: 45 x 55 cm Very good condition Bernard Buffet is one of the greatest contemporary expressionist painters. Courted by some, controversial by others, Buffet's style had a profound impact on painting in the dark periods of the post-war era. Many painting enthusiasts call him a painter of genius. In December 1943, at the age of fifteen, Bernard Buffet passed the entrance exam for the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, and joined the studio of painter Eugène Narbonne. There he met fellow students Maurice Boitel and Louis Vuillermoz. His style takes shape and asserts itself with his first painting, "La Déposition de croix", which he paints in the studio he shares with painter Robert Mantienne, in Massy-Palaiseau. In 1946, he made his debut at the "Salon des moins de trente ans" at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts with a self-portrait. The following year, he exhibited L'Homme accoudé at the Salon des indépendants. The French government, through Raymond Cogniat, makes his first purchase for the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris, the painting Nature morte au poulet. In June 1948, Buffet entered "Deux hommes dans une chambre" for the Prix de la critique (first edition), recently founded by Augustin Rumeau and his wife, owners of Galerie Saint-Placide. He tied with Bernard Lorjou, twenty years his senior. The success was immense. In July, an exhibition of his work is held at the same gallery. He exhibits La Ravaudeuse de filet at the Salon d'Automne, where he meets André Minaux. With Minaux, Jean Couty and Simone Dat, he joins Bernard Lorjou, Yvonne Mottet, Gaston Sébire, Paul Rebeyrolle and Michel Thompson in the L'homme témoin group.
