Jamini Roy (Bengali: যামিনী রায়) (11 April 1887 – 24 April 1972) Tempera (possibly pastel and/or gouache) on cardboard, signed in the lower right. Born in 1887 in a small village in Beliatore, Bankura district, West Bengal, Jamini Roy joined the Government School of Art, Kolkata in 1903. He began his career by painting in the Post-Impressionist genre of landscapes and portraits, very much in keeping with his training in a British academic system. Provenance: according to the late collector and owner's son, the artwork is a part of the owner's late father's inheritance (Mirza Sami Baig Born, born: July 1, 1949, Hyd India, passed away in India visiting in 2013) which includes over 2500 artworks from India. The artworks were purchased directly from the artist in India while Mirza Sami Baig Born made multiple trips to visit the country. Dimensions: 17 1/2 x 15 1/2 in., (44.45 x 39.37 cm.) The painting is in good condition overall with some light surface staining in places. Edges flaking in places, and the top left and bottom right corners are slightly torn.
