Five brass-mounted and silver and copper inlaid boxes made in Syria and Iran, 19th century. The inlay forms a characteristic Estern geometrical pattern and Arabic inscriptions. Provenance: private collection in Pennsylvania. Dimensions: Largest: 4 1/2 x 2 3/4 x 2 1/2 in., (11.5 x 7 x 6.5 cm.) Very good overall with minor expected signs of wear and use.

The cover worked in gold, silver, suaka (refined copper) and shakudo takazogan while the sides are worked in gold hirazogan with katakiribori engravings. The cover depicts three red-crowned cranes amid flowers with Mount Fuji towering in the background, the sides are decorated with a lotus pond motif.
